Originally built in 1928 to house a Louis Sherry shop selling delicacies like caviar and fois gras (restauranteur Sherry had died in 1926.) The design was by McKim, Mead & White, but the AIA Guide called it a "neo-Classical/Art Deco ho-hum candy box," and thought it was much improved by a 1986 Beyer Binder Belle redesign that turned it into a flagship for The Limited clothing chain with a startling greenhouse-like upper floor. Later alterations were made in 2000 for Hermès of Paris by Rena Dumas Architecture Intérieure (their quasi in-house interior design firm of choice for all Hermès stores).

The exterior was used as a filming location for "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006). After Hermés vacated, it was leased to Dolce & Gabbana.
