Nakla Upazila of Sherpur district with an area of 174.80 sq km, is bounded by Nalitabari upazila on the north, jamalpur sadar and Mymensingh sadar upazilas on the south, Phulpur and Haluaghat upazilas on the east, Sherpur sadar upazila on the west. Depression 10, most noted of which is Mehedidanga Beel; main river old Brahmaputra.

The geographic coordinates of Nakla town are 24.9639359N 90.1778871E degree. Nalka (Town) consists of 3 mouzas. The town has an area of 4.6 sq km and a population of 7332; male 53.57%, female 46.43%. The density of population is 1593 per sq km. Literacy rate among the people is 47.3%.

Nakla thana was established in 1930 and was turned into an upazila in 1982. The upazila consists of nine union parishads, 88 mouzas and 117 villages.

Archaeological heritage and relics: Single domed Kalapara Mosque (18th century).

As of 1991 Bangladesh census, population 162952; male 51.03%, female 48.97%; Muslim 97.41%, Hindu 2.28% and others 0.31%.

Average literacy 22.3%, male 26.9% and female 17.7%. Educational institutions: college 3, high school 15, junior high school 6, madrasa 63, maktab 3, orphanage 3, government primary school 56, non-government primary school 50. Noted educational institutions: Chandrakona Rajlaxmi High School (1919), Pachkahania Senior Madrasa (1931).

Religious institutions: Mosque 256, tomb 3, temple 4, most noted of which are Kalapara Mosque, Nakla Bazar Bara Jame Mosque, Upazila Parishad Mosque, Nakla Bazar Mondir.

Main occupations: Agriculture 47.46%, fishing 2.23%, agricultural labourer 22.06%, wage labourer 3.17%, industry 1.25%, commerce 10.57%, service 2.92% and others 10.34%.

Land use: Total cultivable land 14710.64 hectares; uncultivable 2488.87 hectares; forestry 153.78 hectares; single crop 19.91%, double crop 38.62% and treble crop 13.29%; land under irrigation 58.67%.

Land control: Among the peasants 33.69% are landless, 17.29% marginal, 29.20% small, and 19.14% rich.
