Vasai fort, built during Portuguese dynasty in 1535. There are around 7 churches in this fort.
Marathas won this fort in 1739. under Chimaji Aappa Peshwa and built 3 temples in fort. Portuguese stayed here from 1535-1739. Marathas ruled from 1739-1818.
After that British won it.

  • The original pre-Portuguese fort was a very small portion of the existing perimeter. It was part of the central fortified area, enlarged and remodelled by the Portuguese and known by them as fort St. Sebastien (S. Sebastiao). The larger perimeter is entirely Portuguese with the possible exception of the "sea gate" (east), which could be Maratha built. Therefore, Bassein was not a fort stricktly speaking but a fortified town. The remains of the town hall, Captain's house, hospital, cathedral, convents of Franciscans, Augustinians, Jesuits and Dominicans, still exist and are clearly identified by historians.
  • A very wonderful place taken granted by the GOVERNMENT. The place gives the right feel of the brave maratha soldiers who fought and sacrificed their life. a must see place . I love this fort from the bootom of my heart.

  • a place which having different history than anther forts from Maharashtra, special when you see the area secured by strong walls to protects from attack, internal church buildings, big strong doors, good tourist place for tourism, but government should maintain it the fort should be clean and the roots for walk ways should be properly made.all buildings need some maintenance. it is a vasai's valuable treasure.

  • visited yesterday for bird sightings around vasai fort. the feel was great to walk around the fort. I think the historical data should be written there for all to read. Please arange for some restrooms.
