Duns Castle is a rare and exceptional 14th century tower house. The original castle was built about 1320 by the Earl of Moray, the nephew of King Robert the Bruce. Tthe remains of that 'pele tower' were incorporated into the major rebuilding and expansion which was carried out between 1812 and 1822. The Castle had come into the possession of the Hay family (who had close ties with Mary, Queen of Scots) in 1696 and has remained so since.
