McCAULEYVILLE Township, and its village on the Red River opposite the site of Fort Abercrombie, were named in honor of David McCauley, sutler of the fort, who later founded this village and was county superintendent of schools for many years. He was born in Merrimack, N.H., July 27, 1825; came to Minnesota in 1858; opened a store here in 1864, which was the beginning of the village. A post office, 1873-1905, was first located in McCauley's general store in section 10. McCauleyville is the oldest settlement in the Red River Valley. The population of McCauleyville at the 1990 Census was 15, but the estimate in 2000 is around 40.
