Chitina is an unincorporated community at the confluence of the Copper and Chitina rivers along the Edgerton Highway, in the Valdez-Cordova Census Area of Alaska. The population was 177 as of 2009.
The area has been habitated by Athabascan Indians for over 5,000 years. Originally a native village, Chitina grew to a small mining town in the early 1900's after copper was discovered nearby. After the mines closed in 1938, the town was largely abandoned and again reverted to a native village.
