Drisht Castle

Albania / Shkoder /

The Drisht Castle lies at a distance of 6 km from Ura e Mesit (Mes Bridge). A little higher up from the present village is the site of archaeological excavations of the ancient settlement, Drivastium. This settlement dates back to the Roman period and was located en route to Dardania (modern Kosova) from Shkodra. After periods of time under Montenegrin and Venetian rule, it was retaken by Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero. The latter part of the 15th century saw Turkish occupation. The hilltop makes a scenic setting for the Drisht castle. Nowadays, apart from the stunning location and views, you can see the ruins of the castle walls and towers. A small mosque and a handful of houses, one of them a beautiful Ottoman-era house, now forms the village of Kale inside the old castle walls.
