flood protection
Add category
After a period of severe frost, the coast of the island of Marken is sometimes threatened by drifting ice. Ice-floes, sometimes more than a metre thick and ten metres wide might be pushed over the dyke and on this spot, could competely demolish the lower lying hamlet of Rozewerf (most of its houses are made of wood!).
As a protection, twelve metal bars are placed in the water under an angle of approx.30 degrees. Thus an ice-floe pushed against it, will be lifted out of the water and break under its own weight into smaller pieces and become harmless.
