The field here was originally established by the Navy as an emergency landing field during the '20s. During WWII, the Navy established an anti-submarine blimp base to patrol the California coast. After the war, the base became San Diego County property and was turned into an airfield. Visitors would often fly in here to visit the Del Mar Racetrack. However, when I-5 was built in 1959 the airport closed and was abandoned. Building foundations and one of the blimp mooring circles were still visible until 2006 when Southern California Edison began restoring San Dieguito Lagoon.
