Waghadi, a small village in Dahanu taluka of Thane district attained the Status of a Nirmal Gram through its efforts for public cleanliness. Each and every house in Waghadi today has its own latrine. The village has practically utilized every village development scheme of the government and become an ideal village. The village consists of five padas (hamlets) spread over two kilometers. The padas are connected by concrete roads built under village road scheme. The village roads are maintained clean through the voluntary efforts of youth in the village. Gram Panchayat has built 10 public latrines under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in 2005-06. Under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan the school in the village has built clean drinking water facility for students and toilets. The village consists of 256 households and has about 700 students from Anganwadi onwards. The village also has a small tribal student’s hostel run by an NGO Thane Zilla Adivasi Samajonati Sangh.
The village is mainly of rice cultivators. Thane Zilla Parishad has built a check dam on the Surya river near the village. A village tank has been built as a water resource for the drinking water needs of the village connected through a canal to the check dam. During the high summer days even this dries and the village depends on 11 bore wells as on alternative.
The typical topography of Dahanu taluka has two main features. On the one side sea beaches and fisherfolk villages the other is a hilly terrain and populated by tribal and other farmers. Waghadi is at the Western foothills of Sahyadri.
Jay Bajrang Bachat Gat ( Self Help Group of men) has dug a big wormiculture pit. After providing wormiculture products like natural manure to the villagers they are engaged in selling it too. They are able to sell their product to the tune of Rs. 1 lakh per annum.
