  • "Carlson" island. The diagonal hull on the lagoon side is the WW 2 German pocket battleship 'Prinz Eugen'. It sank in a storm while being towed to Kwajalein after WW 2. One of her propellers was removed and sent to a German maritime museum during the 80's.

  • She sank as a result of damage from the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb tests. She survived the Able and Baker tests (July 1946) but was too radioactive to repair leaks.
  • Can you dive the ship? I'd love to visit these places and the sites of the A-bomb tests, they really fascinate me.
  • Diving isn't safe, as the prinz eugen (a heavy cruiser, not pocket battleship) and the other leftover hulks are still very radioactive. you can dive, but you'll get radiation poisoning. Not recomended.
  • This wreck is safe to dive. Radiation is no longer a factor.
  • The proper spelling of this island is Enubuj. I lived there in the early 80's and on many occasions dove the Eugen, my husband on several more occasions.
