This part of the western desert is called "Black Desert" as some layers of the limestone mountains contain manganese so when they were eroded to the surface, the layers reacted with oxygen in the air and took on a black appearance. A very nice contrast to the flat parts of the desert which are yellow-white. The Black Desert is not part of the Bahariah Oasis but of the Baharia depression and stretches south to the bordering cliffs of the plateau. Easy to see many of the black mountains from the road Baharia - Farafra.
