Legally named Belmont Island, the island has its origins in the 1890s as a side-effect of the construction by William Steinway, of piano manufacturer Steinway & Sons, of trolley tunnels under the river to link bustling Manhattan to his eponymous company town in Steinway, Queens.
The tunnels were bought by August Belmont and attached to his IRT subway network. These tunnels are still in use today by the #7 subway line. It is also now a protected bird sanctuary. NO visiting other than a few short visits a year to the memorial. A small colony of double crested cormorants nests here.
