This building served as the US Embassy to the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). When the Federal German capital was moved from Bonn to Berlin, this became the US Embassy to the newly unified Germany until a new purpose-built Embassy was opened in 2008 on the site of the pre-WWII embassy by the Brandenburg Gate.
