house, place with historical importance, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, 17th century construction

Dutch Colonial-style home, first section c.1662, oldest structure on Staten Island, fourth oldest in New York State. Greatly modified by numerous additions, c.1700, 1750, 1790, and 1830, in different styles. Pierre Billou, a Huguenot who arrived at New Amsterdam in 1661 and subsequently received a land grant on Staten Island, erected the original fieldstone section. He was a founder of Old Dorp (Old Town). In 1679, landowner Thomas Stilwell bought and enlarged the house. His descendants owned it until the mid-18th century, at which time Edward Perine acquired it. The Perine family owned it until 1913. It has a shingled, sloping roof, and an unusual jambless fireplace, which is very high and has a large stone hearth. A secret chamber opens into a room that features a ceiling with exceptionally large beams. Owned by the Staten Island Historical Society, the house is open to the public.
