GIPR Tank

India / Maharashtra / Ambarnath /
lake, tank - to be removed, dam

It is actually a small dam. The Great Indian Peninsular Railway Tank is so called because water was pumped from this place for the steam engines of the Great Indian Peninsular Railway during the times of the British Raj.

The planning of the dam was done by Mr Breakley, who was a route designer of GIPR railways.

The 3rd pic is the security cabin built by Mr Breakley for the watchmen to secure the dam. its in bad state now, almost enroached.

Nowadays it is a favorite spot for people from the surrounding areas to come in the evenings, especially on weekends, for some peace and quiet and a whiff of fresh air. Great place to watch sunsets from, as the calm waters reflect the sky above.
One can walk along the shoreline of the lake and eventually across the small dam. Be careful though, the dam has no railings and it is an awfully deep or long drop (depending on which side you fall off). On the other side one can see Haji malang gad and the lovely Sahaydri mountains.

But now a days there is a Chemical factory (RR Chemicals) coming right at the mouth of it, will pollute it a short time, British would not have allowed a Chemical plant or plants in its vicinity.

Ambernath MIDC now borders the lake on one side.
