Construction of Southern Valley began in January 1998 on 138 acres situated in Shorne just south of Gravesend in Kent. The site was originally Gravesend Airport, which was actively in use during the 2nd World War and overlooks the Thames Estuary.

The course has been designed and built in sympathy with a traditional Links Course. It features large greens and tees alongside undulating fairways. The subsoil is predominantly chalk that provides excellent drainage conditions. The tees and greens have been built to the most modern specifications and ensures that no temporary tees or greens are used any time of the year.

As the course is young, the landscaping still needs time to mature, but 30,000 gorse and broom plants have been imported which enhances the feel of a seaside links.

Since opening, improvements have been made throughout with the addition of bunkers and four new back tees. This is part of a long term plan to improve the course.
