Saint Paraskeva Church (Pleven)

Bulgaria / Pleven / Pleven / ул. Света Параскева, 1
 church, 1872_construction, Bulgarian Orthodox Church

There are records of this church’s existence back in the 16th century. In 1850 there was a small double-weave-and-mortar church here dedicated to Saint Paraskeva (or Petka, as she is more commonly known in Bulgaria), built with donations from the local population. In 1858 a school was opened at the church. As the city was growing, it became necessary to enlarge and refurbish the building, which led to the construction of a new one. Work was completed in 1872, and on 20 December 1872 the new church was sanctified by none other than Exarch Anthim I. Construction was done by masters from the well-known Tryavna School; the icons were donated by local craftsmen, and the murals were painted by the prominent artist Gospodin Serbezov.
