Ed (Doc) Rickett's Pacific Biological Laboratory, 800 Ocean View Avenue, operated here from 1927 to 1948. Early concepts of marine ecology were developed here. The lab made an appearance as "Western Biological Laboratories" in John Steinbeck's novel Cannery Row.
