Site of Ocean Towers SPI (South Padre Island, Texas)

USA / Texas / South Padre Island / South Padre Island, Texas
demolished, interesting place, historical layer / disappeared object

This site marks the location of what was once a topped out 31-story luxury condominium skyscraper, planned to be the tallest building in South Padre Island. The tower was topped out by the time construction stopped in May 2008. During this time, the ground had shifted dramatically, causing the building to sink into the ground and cracks to form in beams and columns. After plans to fix the problem were cancelled as it would be horrifically expensive to do so, the sold units were reimbursed and demolition plans began in 2009.

At 9:00 AM, local time on December 13, 2009, the building was imploded and demolished, much to the excitement of visitors who had come to observe the event. It was the building tallest demolished building in Texas, surpassing the 380 ft (116 m) Landmark Tower in Fort Worth.
