  • Those are spoil islands created when the channel, now mostly silted in, was dredged. You see them in their larger form along the intercoastal waterway which is just west of this, and runs north and south.
  • Look just north at Port Mansfield and the much larger spoil islands that were created when the Army Corps of Engineers dredged the channel to the Gulf that split Padre Island in half.
