On December 8, 2005, a snowy night in Chicago, Southwest 1248 arriving from Baltimore-Washington landed long on runway 31C and was unable to stop, crashing through the airport's perimeter fence and onto S. Central Ave. just south of 55th. The plane hit three cars, killing a six year old boy and injuring nine people. Three passengers on the plane received minor injuries.
