park, region

Current channel of Minnehaha Creek below Minnehaha Falls. Formed by Mississippi River about 10,000 years ago when St. Anthony Falls receded faster on the east Side of Soldier's Home Island than the west side, leaving an abandoned falls at the north end of the glen, as well as an over-sized channel for Minnehaha Creek. Minnehaha Falls has also receded, as it used to be located at the edge of the abandoned Mississippi channel and is now about 1,000 feet to the west.
Minnehaha Park was established in 1885 as Minnesota's first State Park. It was given to the city in 1889 and since then it has been a City Park and nature preserve.
