LZ 129 Hindenburg (Deutsches Luftschiff Zeppelin #129; Registration: D-LZ 129) was a large German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the largest flying machines of any kind (by dimension) ever built. The Hindenburg was named after the late Paul von Hindenburg (1847–1934), President of Germany from 1925–1934.The airship flew from March 1936 until destroyed by fire 14 months later on May 6, 1937, at the end of the first North American transatlantic journey of its second season of service. During its first season, it was usually stored in Hangar 1 (to the right of the tag) after arrival. Both ends of the airship were exposed when stored. Thirty-six people died in the accident, which occurred while landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station.

The chain-outlined memorial pad, dedicated in 1987 on the 50th anniversary of the accident, is located on the site where the airship's gondola landed. Access is provided by the Navy Lakehurst Historical Society on Wednesdays and the second and fourth Saturday of the month.
