Ugra Narasimha Shrine (Hampi)

India / Karnataka / Kamalapuram / Hampi
statue, Vishnu temple, UNESCO World Heritage Site, historical building

The tourist information board says that it is Lakshmi Narasimha but there is no Lakshmi sitting on the lap of Lord Narasimha as it used to be. The absence of Lakshmi, perhaps due to the incompletion as stated below by the previous tag in the description .
The monolithic statue is 6.3 m tall including its arch. It is awesome and striking to the viewers. The statue work was commissioned by Krishna Deva Raya of Tuluva dynasty during his reign of Vijayanagar empire. The statue was said to be sculpted by a Brahmin, but the proposed temple around the statue was not completed, owing to the pillage of the city in the aftermath of defeat of the Vijayanagar military forces at Thallikota in year 1565.
