Three "tubes" carry six lanes of traffic for a mile-and-a-half under the Hudson River from Weehawken, New Jersey, to the borough of Manhattan. The tunnel was designed by Ole Singstad. Work on the first tube began in 1934: it was opened to traffic in 1937. World War II delayed the completion of the second tube until 1945, and wrangling over who would pay for the third tube kept it from being finished until May, 1957. The tunnel has had several appearances in film including "Conquest of the Hudson"-1938, "No Time For Love"-1943, "Daylight"-(1996), "Elf"-(2004), and "Disaster Zone: Volcano in New York"-2006.
