In 1996, a team of amateur rocketeers launched a 685 pound rocket with 300 pounds of solid rocket fuel from ~4.7 miles away at the Balls Research Rocket Launch site. The 94,000 foot (19 mile) flight was heavily documented by a film crew from the discovery channel, and in the High Power Rocketry Magazine that covers this hobby. This location is the final resting place of the vehicle after the parachute failed to open and the rocket drove into the ground the same way it went up. It is estimated the vehicle is 30-40 feet under the playa soil.
