Methone

Greece / Pieria / Methyni /
 archaeological site, ancient ruins

The ruined site of ancient Methone is located just north of modern Nea Agathoupolis, on the western shore of the Thermaic Gulf. A Bronze Age settlement occupied the eastern hill, all the way to the coast, while its necropolis was located on the western hill. During the Iron Age the settlement expanded onto the western hill. Methone was captured and destroyed by Philip II of Macedon in 354/353 BC. Methone's regional importance passed to Pydna farther to the south.
