This is the original camp dining hall. Increased camp use rendered it too small and a new larger facility was built.

  • "Increased camp use rendered it too small." This statement is not true. If it were true, then it would not have accommodated the largest numbers of campers that Worth Ranch experienced, which was during the early 1960s. During those years, the increased numbers were easily accommodated by simply extending the camp season to as many as nine weeks. Eventually the seating capacity of Roeser Dining Hall was enlarged by adding a new kitchen to the rear of the building and expanding the seating area into the space previously occupied by the old kitchen. By the 1990s, the baby boom generation had moved on and the numbers of campers was considerably less. By this time the camp ran for only 6 weeks or so each summer, and the Roeser Dining Hall continued to accommodate the boys from a full camp. The reason a new dining hall was built was because an ambitious Scout Executive in Fort Worth wanted to make a name for himself. The monstrous new dining hall that resulted easily swallowed up two weeks worth of campers. This forced the shortening of the camp season from the traditional 6-plus weeks to a shortened three weeks. Now, three weeks after camp starts, its over. And the camp staff are sent home to Fort Worth to search for summer jobs to fill out the summer.
  • I spent the early 80's going to summer camp here. Camp usually ran from the second week of June all the way into August. Having been in the largest troop in the Longhorn Council that would send as many as 80 scouts, I can attest that it was indeed plenty large.
