Description:

The University of Duisburg-Essen is located in a region that boasts the highest concentration of universities in Europe. 33,700 students are enrolled here and with 3,640 academic and non-academic staff members, the university occupies an important position among employers in this region. It was founded on 1st January 2003 and is thus the youngest university in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was the result of a merger of two preceding institutions, the Universities of Duisburg and Essen, both of which were established in 1972.

The new twin-campus university in the centre of the Rhine-Ruhr area has used this opportunity to strengthen and showcase its research and teaching potential, which transcends far beyond regional borders. It offers a broad spectrum of subjects, ranging from well-established social sciences, economics and humanities departments through to highly-esteemed design departments, as well as faculties of engineering and natural sciences, including medicine. Students are able to graduate with traditional degrees in education and medicine, but also with the new Bachelor's or Master's degrees in a growing number of disciplines. A high priority is given to expanding these consecutive, mainly interdisciplinary degree programmes, which not only meet international standards but also attract students from near and far. Furthermore, the university offers working professionals a number of attractive courses that are geared to individual learning speed by applying integrated e-learning methods.
