This is a large volcanic rock buttress situated at an elevation around 400m above Akaroa Harbour. The buttess derives from trachyte lava that oozed into the Akaroa volcano around eight million years ago. Being more resistant to weathering than the surrounding basalt, it has eroded more slowly and so now protrudes impressively into the landscape. Though situated on private land, it is recognised and protected by an open space covenant. The QEII National Trust administers such covenants. See www.openspace.org.nz/ and Open Space magazine, July 2006 edition for a article about this landscape feature.
