An early New Town in Hertfordshire built in the 1920s. In a similar style to the older nearby Letchworth, planners made sure every house enjoys what can be termed decent size front and back gardens. It was designed to be environmentally friendly by engaging people with their surroundings as well as catering for housing demand - something people are trying to do once more today. It is often called 'WGC' or 'Welwyn' - which is infact the name of a seperate nearby village. It has a population of 43,000, including many commuters.
