The former weapons storage area was the site of the 27 July 1956 crash of a B-47 Stratojet into one of the igloo's. The three Mk6 fission bombs suffered significant damage to include exposure of detonators on the HE sphere. There was no possibility of a nuclear explosion since the nuclear capsules were stored elsewhere. Also, the notion that the countryside would have become contaminated and turned into a desert if the conventional HE in the bombs detonated spreading uranium 238 is false. Four crewman of the 307th Bomb Wing died in the crash.
