One of the three Olmsted-designed parks in the city of Milwaukee (Olmsted designed Central Park and was the most famed landscape designer of the 19th Century). Washington Park dates to the 1880s and despite some notable changes over the years, especially the addition of a freeway on the western edge, Washington Park's soul is still intact. This park has a lovely lagoon with islands, bridges, and a paddleboat rental, a 1930s era band shell called the "Blatz Temple of Music," and several monuments to great Germans including Frederick Von Stueben and Goethe. The park went through a rough patch the in 1990s with several high profile criminal incidents, but the park is now back with free music on Saturdays in the summer, active basketball courts and a swimming pool.
