Tonbridge is a medieval small town on the River Medway that has been overtaken by its relatively recent offspring Tunbridge Wells. Historically it was known as "Tunbridge" but was renamed to avoid confusion in the 19th century. Today Tonbridge is a straightforward working-class town at an important railway junction providing easy commuting to London with a range of small-scale local industry. The largest cash robbery in UK history of £53 million from a cash depot in the town's industrial estate brought Tonbridge to the headlines in early 2006.

  • Please ignore the above comment. I found Tonbridge a really nice town. People were friendly, the river was clean and had plenty of wildlife and fish in it. The Castle is excellent. Plenty of decent places to eat and drink and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Trains were quick, very clean - station is a bit crummy. Good town to stay in - spent a month there on business.
