 interesting place, public garden

A marvelous privately-maintained but publicly-accessible garden, the first of sixty locations featured in "A Guide to Great American Public Places", begun on an abandoned hillside over fifty years ago by a local resident, Grace Marchant, after whom the Garden is named, and adjacent to the Filbert Steps, still in existence today and (in the words of the Guide) "A Touch of Eden".

  • I'm proud to mention that Grace was my great aunt and every time I get to San Francisco I walk the steps in amazement at what she accomplished. I live near Seattle so it's only every 20 years or so I get to enjoy her handy work. Being there just a month ago (May 2009), I'm glad to see that the neighboirhood still cares for the gardens.
