McCormick, South Carolina

USA / South Carolina / MacCormick /
 town, county seat

Town with a population of 1,489 at the 2000 census. County seat of McCormick County. Known as Dornsville until the inventor of the horse-drawn reaper, Cyrus McCormick, purchased a gold mine in the area, at which point the town and county were named after him.

Named after Cyrus McCormick, in May, 1882, the McCormick family took a strong interest in the community and the Town's general layout was left to McCormick's wife, Nettie. Nettie envisioned a Town laid out in blocks, with the names of streets such as Gold, Pine, Oak, Cherry, Maple. An old map of the Town shows the three main blocks of Main, North and South. Fire destroyed most of the main area of Town in 1884; also in 1884, the McCormick Academy was built as a contribution to the Town. Even after McCormick's death on May 13, 1884, Nettie continued her interest in the community for many years.
