City with a population of 2,712 in 2000. County seat of Jefferson County. Laid out in 1786 as the prospective state capital of Georgia. Building commenced thereafter, and the city served as state capital from 1796 to 1806. Named for Louis XVI in appreciation for French aid for the Americans during the Revolution. It was a slave auction location before the Civil War.
