Site of the first test of introducing Siberian reindeer into Alaska in the 1890's to supplement the decreasing population of Caribou due to irresponsible hunting by commercial whalers. The natives were taught reindeer herding and used the animals for subsistence to replace the Caribou. 1950's topo maps still describe reindeer herding cabins as landmarks.
