San Lorenzo Fortress

17th century Spanish fort built from blocks of cut coral (according to the Lonely Planet) at the mouth of the Chagres River. Sacked by pirates(Henry Morgan) and eventually left to ruin.

In 2010, the wreck of one of Morgan's pirate ships was located in the water just off the fortress and archaeological work is underway.

The fortress is a designed UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the remaining defenses of Portobelo.
