Former Site of United States Naval Station Coco Solo

Panama / Colyn /
 military, abandoned / shut down

Established on April 9th, 1920, US Naval Station Coco Solo became the main US Submarine Base in the Panama Canal Zone, and also supported a small air station for the defense of the Canal and its approaches.

The station grew sharply in size during the 1930's and 1940's with the addition of a large Hospital and the surge of aircraft, crews and ships during the Second World War. Following the war, the station began to decrease in size as both its air station and submarine facilities were replaced by more modern facilities in other locations in the Canal Zone. The last US Navy ships departed the docks in the 1960's and much of the commands once located onsite were transferred to the Naval Station on Galeta Island by the end of the 1980's.

With the return of the Panama Canal Zone to Panama in 1999, all US Military and Government operations at Naval Station Colo Solo ceased. Much of the land was left in an unchanged condition, but most of the waterfront and berthing spaces were quickly rebuilt as part of the Manzanillo International Terminal, one of the largest container terminals in South America.
