The Pukchang complex is the largest thermal power station in the DPRK and provides energy to the neighboring factories in the Pukchang area of South Pyongan province. It was constructed as part of an economic and technology exchange agreement with the Soviet Union, with the first five generators seeing completion in 1970. Subsequent generators were added and finished in 1973, 1974, 1975, 1982 and 1985. The complex has a capacity of 1.6 million kW.
