The Buffalo Water Intake Crib is the primary source of water for the City of Buffalo, and was built in 1920 to tap the cleaner and deeper waters of Lake Erie where it drains into the Niagara River. Connected to the Col. Ward Pumping Station by a 12-foot diameter pipeline that extends for 6,600 feet beneath the bottom of the lake, the crib gathers up to 125 million gallons of fresh water every day.

The crib also serves as an important Aid-to-Navigation, as it eventually replaced the ice-damaged and decaying Horseshoe Reef Light and displays a single white light with a two flash at five-second interval characteristic.
