The Division of Urban Systems Development was incepted in the year 1974 as a wing of the Department of Civil Engineering. Since the inception, the Division offers Post Graduate Programme in M.E (Urban Engineering). The focus of the programme has been Transportation Planning, Traffic Engineering and Urban Infrastructure Planning and Management. From the academic year 2002-2003, the Division offers another Post Graduate Programme – M.E (Highway and Transport Management). Highway Planning and Design and Highway Safety are the thrust areas of the programme M.E (Highway and Transport Management).

The University Grants Commission has recognized the Division as Centre of Excellence and has offered assistance under the D.S.A III (Departmental Special Assistance) in the year 2002. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has sanctioned financial assistance in 2003 for modernization of Highway and Traffic Engineering Laboratory.

The Division regularly conducts Continuing Education Programmes such as Seminar, Symposia and Workshops in collaboration with Public, Semi-Public and Private Professional Organisations working in the area of Urban Transportation and Infrastructure.

The objective of the Division has been to train Civil Engineers as Transportation Planners, Traffic Engineers, Highway Engineers, Urban Engineers and Municipal Engineers. The students are trained to plan, design and develop Transportation Infrastructure.

The Division has undertaken a large number of research and consultancy studies sponsored by International, National, State and Local Organisations. ‘Comprehensive Traffic and Transportation Studies’, ‘Traffic Operational Management Plans’, ‘Land Use Transport Model’, and ‘Decision Support System for Road Safety’ are some of the studies completed by the Division in the last five years.
