The port is situated of the right bank of the Dnieper river, 15 kilometers off the estuary. The approach to it is performed via fairway which lies in the Rvach river, the Olhovoy Dnieper branch and the Dnieper itself.

The navigation in the port works all year round. The winds are mostly of the northern and north-eastern direction. Days with winds more than 15 m/c make 10 % in the year and mostly often are observed from November till March.

Fogs happen 19-60 days a year in average and last 5-6 hours a day.

The Dnieper estuary is announced national reserve area. Ship-going is allowed only in the branches.

Passing the fairway which leads to the port makes no great difficulties.

During winter period when the Dnieper friezes the vessels are lead to the port with the help of the ice-breakers.

The road of the Port of Kherson is a part of the river Dnieper between the upper road for river-going vessels which is located 1 km with the stream from the elevator.
