Kherson (Ukrainian: Херсон, Greek: Χερσώνα or Χερσών) is a city in the South of Ukraine.
It is the administrative center of the Kherson City Hromada (community), the Kherson Raion (district) and the Kherson Oblast (region) of Ukraine.
Population: 279,131 (2022).
The city was named after the ancient Greek city-colony of Chersonesus in Crimea. In Greek, Χερσόνησος means 'peninsular shore'.
Kherson is an important port on the Black Sea and Dnipro (Dnieper) River, and the home of a major ship-building industry.
It is also a regional economic centre.
On March 7, 2022, Kherson was awarded the honorary title 'Hero City of Ukraine'.
