Constructed between 1853 and 1854 during the peak of the California gold rush. It is the earliest stone building constructed in Placerville and one of the oldest still standing. The building was originally constructed by John Fountain and Benjamin Tallman and used as a soda works. Over the years the building has been sold/bought/and auctioned off by many owners and has been used for a multitude of services to include office space, storage space, town jail, and even PG&E offices. In 1981 the building was deeded to the El Dorado County Historical Society to be used as a museum; which is its purpose to this day.
