  • Nakkasalem is a small-medium size village at the foot hills of Pachamalai ranges. The village is on the main road connecting Thuraiyur (12km) and Perambalur (21km)towns and well served by frequent buses. Farming is the main occupation and Small onion is the major commercial crop. While mainly a rainfed region, other crops such as rice, groundnut, cholam (sorghum), cumbu (millets), ellu (sesame) are also cultivated with irrigation in some seasons. While Tamil is the language of the diverse community of people, some also speak Telugu (Reddiars) and Kannada (Koundars) at home. People in general live in harmony and peace with no communal troubles. The village has temples for Sivan, Perumal, Pillayar, Mariamman, Chelliamman, Elliamman, Anjaneyar. The Elliamman temple (the village guardian goddess)contains a very large wooden statue of Veerabadhrar, the ferocious looking god, bearing fire in one hand, a raised sword in the other hand and a large handlebar moustache. As kids we were frightened to even look at the statue. Elders in the village used to tell a story how once Veerabadhrar was taken out in a festival procession and many houses caught fire and the deity was never ever taken out for processeion afterwards. Chettikulam (5km) is an important nearby pilgrim town famous for large Murugan temple on a hill and an ancient large Sivan temple in the town. Nakkasalem has a high school and a couple of primary schools. Business establishments include a bank branch, a rice mill, fair price shop, a cooperative milk society, brick works, veterinary clinic, and many small shops popular with people reading newspapers, gossiping about politics or cinema, waiting for buses or simply spending time. Although the village still retains its traditions, due to increasing levels of education and jobs, television and mobile phones, proximity to large towns of Thuraiyur and Perambalur and good transport connections, the village is slowly changing to be much more modern than what it was about 10 or 20 years ago. However, for people who spent their life in Nakkasalem the village will always remain the best place on earth.
  • A note on the origin of the name of the village 'Nakkasalem': No one for sure knows why, how, when or by whome the name village got its name. Nakka in Tamil means 'lick'. Some people beleive that the village name has Telugu origin due to the large Telugu speaking Reddiars living in the village. Nakka in Telugu means fox (Nari in Tamil) and large number of wild foxes still live in the nearby Pachamalai hills and forests. Some years back the hills also had tigers, boars (wild pigs), and many other wild animals but have been killed or hunted and became extinct. The Pachamalai forests are also well known for sandalwood trees although mature trees are rare in this part of hills near Nakkasamlem.
