The building was constructed between 1923 - 1929 by banker and mine owner Julius Petschek as the Bank Petschek.
During the German occupation the building served as the headquarters of the Gestapo. Countless people were tortured and executed within its walls, especially after the assassination of SS-Gruppenfüher Reinhard Heydrich in July 4th, 1942 (Operation Anthropoid).
It serves today as a Czech government ministry, but a plaque on the wall commemorates the victims who died within.
