Arakkankottai Channel, an irrigation diversion channel from Bhavani River at Kodiveri iirigates Northern Bhavani Valley. It is one of the most fertile and very scenic river valley in entire Tamil Nadu with high mountains extending from Thalaimalai range. Rice planting is traditional and sugar cane is a cash crop planted at some places. Due to labor shortage and lower support price for rice alternate crops such as banana and turmeric are explored for cultivation. The water used to be drinkable without treatment. However with jobbers servicing the textile industries of Thiruppur along the upper reaches, the water is unsuitable for drinking and at times made toxic by dumping harsh chemicals.
